The Moldovan government is set to hold active dialogue with the Council of Europe and to implement an action plan which would lead to lifting the council's monitoring of Moldova, Deputy Premier, Foreign and European Integration Minister Iurie Leanca told a news conference today.
We have set this goal and I would like to believe that we will manage to have Moldova out of the Council of Europe's monitoring by late 2010, Leanca said, adding that state institutions are working coherently in this direction. The Foreign and European Integration Ministry holds a very good dialogue with the Justice Ministry, the Prosecutor General's Office, as well as with the parliament given that it is necessary to amend a string of legislative acts to this end, he said.
Leanca noted that the fact that Moldova has been under the Council of Europe's monitoring for 15 years proves that the former government afforded serious deficiencies in terms of democratic norms and functioning of democratic institutions.
Moldova is to present a report on the fulfillment of its commitments to the Council of Europe to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in April 2010.
