Moldovan acting president participates in solemn meeting of Lithuanian parliament

Parliament Speaker and acting President Mihai Ghimpu has participated in a solemn meeting of Lithuania's Seimas (parliament), held on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of this country's independence and in events of commemoration of the historical events from 11 March 1990. On this date, the Lithuanian Supreme Council adopted the Act on the Restoration of Lithuania's Independence - a historical document which became a symbol of the democratic victory over the Soviet occupation regime, the parliament's media relations department has said.

Attending the event were heads of state and parliament speakers from over 20 countries.

Subsequently, acting President Mihai Ghimpu had a string of informal meetings with heads of state and parliament who participated in the solemn meeting. The discussions were focused on ways to boost bilateral cooperation relations, as well as on support at the international level.

Under the official agenda, President Mihai Ghimpu along with MP Ion Hadirca attended a ceremony of hoisting the national banners of the Baltic Countries and a parade of the Lithuanian Army.

Later on 11 March, Mihai Ghimpu will also meet the signatories to the Act on Restoration of Independence, and will address the former Lithuanian Seimas members who signed this document.

Moldova was the first state to recognize Lithuania's independence.
