The Security and Information Service (SIS) is not interested in concealing the information on the 2009 April riots, the institution cooperates and provides the parliamentary commission and inquiry bodies with the necessary data to elucidate the conditions in which the peaceful protests degenerated into street violence, SIS head Gheorghe Mihai said at a 12 March meeting with representatives of the public association, Parliament-90.
Referring to the involvement of SIS employees in the last April events, Gheorghe Mihai said that "their role will be established by the inquiry body, and the guilt - by the law court." To this end, SIS appeals to the civil society and shows openness to receive any kind of information on the events which took place in April 2009.
The head of the secret services also said that, while assessing the activities and phenomena which may affect the state's security, SIS is to observe the right to political pluralism and freedom of opinion. The SIS director stressed that the transparency in the activity of the secret services is an important aspect for a state based on the rule of law. "While being aware of the society's expectations on this issue, the Security and Information Service will continue undertaking concrete steps, so that this public institution defends the interest of the citizen, society and the state, and not at all the interests of a party or group," Mihai emphasized.
Touching upon the need to carry out an institutional reform within SIS, Gheorghe Mihai said that "the European integration process puts new requirements, including on the reform on the national defence and security system, a component of which is SIS. In context, concept-related and structural changes may appear so as to consolidate the institution's potential and guarantee the efficient involvement in ensuring the security."
