State to provide subsidies to low-income citizens to process biometric passports - Moldovan PM

Prime Minister Vlad Filat today was on a working visit to the Information Technologies and Communications Ministry (MTIC) and the state enterprise, Centre for State Information Resources, Registru (Registrar), the government's press service has said.

The prime minister showed interest in the problems faced by these institutions, their technical equipment, ways to process papers and their cost, tightening the personal data's security. A special subject was the issuing exclusively of biometric passports starting from 1 January 2011, as this is an obligatory condition for Moldova to benefit from the liberalised visa regime.

Vlad Filat said that the role of these two institutions is essential in Moldova getting the liberalised visa regime.

"It is very important to supply Moldova's citizens with biometric passports, so that they can travel freely to the European Union in the near future. In this respect, I deem it necessary to carry out a campaign of informing the citizens on the need to have biometric passports," Vlad Filat specified.

The prime minister said that the state will provide subsidies for the processing of biometric passports by low-income citizens.

Vlad Filat asked to identify possibilities to cut costs of processing IDs, including biometric passports.

The prime minister thanked MTIC for the prompt reactions to the government's requests. He said that, beginning with March 2010, the Moldovan citizens working abroad may process identity acts at Moldova's diplomatic missions from abroad.

Referring to the state enterprise, Registru, Vlad Filat said that, over the last years, this structure has created not a quite positive image.

"I think that the problem resided in the secret way of this structure's management. I urge you to be transparent and very responsibly in your activity. Also, I want the personal data be ensured with a high degree of protection," the prime minister said.

Information technologies and Communications Minister Alexandru Oleinic said that the problems tackled within the discussion are up-to-date, and the ministry will work to settle them.

The minister gave assurances that the structure he leads will do its utmost to provide the citizens with quality services at reasonable prices.
