The number of polling stations for the upcoming September 5 referendum will be more than twice greater than usually to reach 78, the Central Election Commission has decided upon the Government’s recommendation.

This means that at this referendum, citizens of Moldova will be able to vote not only in Moldovan embassies is some capitals of the world but also at additional stations to be arranged in areas where considerable communities of Moldovans are available.

Polling stations will be opened in 27 countries, in particular in Italy – 20, in Russia and Romania – 6 stations each, in the United States, Portugal and Germany – 4 each.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration has been appointed responsible for organizing and technical equipment of the polling facilities, which must be ready for voting 35 days before the referendum date. [As a matter of fact, this should mean the stations must be ready by next Sunday, August 1, or within 5 working days from now.]

Each such station will be administered by an electoral commission of 7 to consist of commission chairperson (to be appointed by the Moldovan Ambassador to the country concerned), 5 bureau members representing the 5 parliamentary parties, and 1 bureau member to represent the CEC.

The organization of the polling stations abroad will require 120 thousand euros, which Moldova hopes to receive from its foreign partners. Upon the whole, the referendum will cost Moldova 32.7 million lei, the CEC presumes.

The Central Election Commission has just registered one more, the 14th official participant in the September 5 referendum – the Conservative Party.
