Moldovans are expected to come to polling stations today to participate in a constitutional referendum and decide whether the president should be elected at nationwide polls or in the parliament as it is the case at present.

As many as 2,035 polling stations, including 78 abroad and 12 for Dniester residents, were opened to this end today. According to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), 2,660,474 voters are included in the electoral lists. People can exercise their right to vote from 7:00 to 21:00.

As many as 156 international observers and 702 national observers are accredited to monitor the voting. The total spending for the referendum stands at about 32.7 million lei (over 2 million euros).

Twenty five parties were registered for participation in the referendum, of which 16 are in favour of nationwide presidential elections, three speak against, four boycott the referendum and two did not announce their stance.

The need to change the presidential election procedure emerged after the previous and current parliament had repeatedly failed to elect the head of state. The mechanism for electing the president was last changed in 2000, when the parliament decided that the head of state should be elected by MPs and not by popular vote.
