The Prosecutor General’s Office will investigate crimes in the information technologies’ field for the first time, which will be realized by a special created department.
According to the Office press service, the main project purpose is to combat crimes in the information technologies’ field.
Representatives of the Office said that law enforcement agencies registered 4 information technology and communication infringements in Moldova in the first half of 2010 (against 5 cases in 2009) and 4 infringements concerning author and related rights (against 22 offences in 2009).
Prosecutors said the number of law breaches registered by competent authorities (the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Center for Combating Economic Crimes and Corruption) is too little. For comparison, Russian authorities registered 5.147 offences for first 5 months of 2010, and 11.636 information crimes – in 2009.
According to the Business Software Alliance’s researches concerning personal computer software piracy, the Republic of Moldova is included in a group of states with the highest piracy level, ranking 4th from all world countries (after Georgia, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe). According to Business Software Alliance, 91% of soft programs in Moldova are used illegally.
Prosecutors think the low number of this type of crimes registered in Moldova could be explained by the fact that population is poorly informed in this field.
The Prosecutor General’s Office addresses to the society to favor information criminality prevention and to struggle against it. Prosecution calls on people to tell to law enforcement agencies about the information concerning illegal access to computerized information, to production, importation, selling or illegal using of technical means or soft programs, paroles, access codes or analogous data, and about illegal interception of informational data.
