EU to give Moldova over one million euros for regional development

The European Union will provide Moldova with 1.170 million euros for the implementation of a twinning project "Capacity Building in Regional Development in Moldova." The project was launched today, and will be carried out in partnership with France, Latvia and Romania in May 2012 - January 2014.

The project provides for holding instruction seminars, workshops and study travels. All these action aim at backing the development and implementation of development policy in Moldova and strengthening institutional capacities of the Moldovan Regional Development and Constructions Ministry (MDRC). The main participants in the project are the MDRC administration staff and the regional development partners.

The project has three components, which see revising of the present legislative framework on regional development, territorial planning and developing capacities of the above-mentioned ministry's specialists.

At the project's launch, Regional Development and Constructions Minister Marcel Raducan said this project will boost and support the development and implementation of the regional development policy in Moldova. Raducan noted that the twinning was conceived as an instrument of administrative cooperation aimed at backing the EU candidate and neighbour states.

Head of the EU Delegation to Chisinau Dirk Schuebel said the project that was launched today is very important for Moldova, as the country still has much to do in the regional development sector to meet the European standards. "This project will focus on the National Regional Development Strategy, revising the legislative and regulatory framework for regional development and revision of procedures of regional development and consolidating capacities," Schuebel said.

French Ambassador to Moldova Gerard Guillonneau stressed that the project is important both for Moldova and France, as the policy of cooperation with Moldova will be developed via the actions due to be implemented.

Romanian Ambassador to Moldova Marius Lazurca appreciated the project's implementation in partnership with experts from France, Romania and Latvia. Lazurca emphasized that the country he represents will continue backing Moldova's European integration.

Attending the event were the partners involved in the implementation of the twinning project and representatives of the central, regional and local public administration.
