The Liberal lawmakers requested calling a special sitting of Parliament on May 16 to commemorate 200 years of the annexation of Bessarabia by the Tsarist Empire. The chairman of Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu also asked declaring May 16 as National Mourning Day, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The poverty, misery, corruption and today’s communism are among the causes of the Russian occupation of 1812, which created preconditions for the Soviet occupation of 1940. Moldovans’ hearts were broken into two then,” said Mihai Ghimpu.
The Socialists’ leader Igor Dodon said the Liberals’ request was an aberration.
“You allow him to promote populism here. He is an unaffiliated MP, not an opposition member. He is a stray man,” Mihai Ghimpu stated after Igor Dodon made the statement.
Dumitru Diacov, who heads the Democratic parliamentary group, said that the MPs should forget about mourning and occupations as such things hinder them from solving important problems.
The Liberal MPs’ proposal will be examined in the next meeting of the Standing Bureau.
