A draft of the National Development Strategy "Moldova 2020" stirred up passions in the parliament today. After the deputies traded innumerable retorts, the examination of the draft was postponed until tomorrow.

The dispute started as Liberal MPs asked that the draft should be transferred to another plenary meeting. "The strategy is weak, and we want a comprehensive document. Moldova needs laws and not concepts," the leader of the junior coalition partner Liberal Party, Mihai Ghimpu, said.

Valeriu Strelet, the leader of the parliamentary faction of the senior coalition Liberal Democratic Party, said the draft had been in the parliament since April and must be passed. "The EU has recently adopted a similar strategy and Moldova needs a document setting long-term objectives," Strelet said.

Socialists leader, MP Igor Dodon backed the Liberals proposal.

The National Development Strategy "Moldova 2020" will provide a general view of how Moldova shall look by 2020. The document contains seven priorities that would contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction, in particular studies, roads, finances, business, energy, pension system and justice.
