The opposition Party of Communists (PCRM) is set to submit to the parliament a draft law on the removal of the syntagm "sexual orientation" from the equality law, PCRM leader Vladimir Voronin said at a news briefing today.

Voronin said that the PCRM, which has been boycotting the parliamentary meetings for about half a year, may return to the parliament in order to vote for this draft. "The PCRM is ready to return to the parliament when it votes this draft. We will do it only for the sake of our citizens' civil dignity and of the Orthodox faith," Voronin said.

He called on the ruling alliance MPs to back the PCRM draft in order to "bring back order in the country and stop the split in society".

If the ruling Alliance for European Integration does not back the draft, the PCRM will start a national referendum, Voronin said.

Voronin noted that Moldova will receive a visa free regime with the EU only when Russia and Ukraine benefit from this right.

On 25 May, the parliament passed the equality law. The document triggered a wave of protests among Christian organizations, which speak against the legitimation of homosexuals. The syntagm "sexual orientation" is mentioned in only one article of the law, which provides for non-discrimination of homosexuals at their working places.
