This was stated by Vice Premier, Minister of Economy Valeriu Lazar, who has noted that the new long-term contract for deliveries of Russian gas to Moldova will be signed as the states conclude an intergovernmental agreement of cooperation in the fuel-energy sector. The talks on this matter are planned to be started shortly after Russian Premier Dmitry Medvedev appoints a person in charge of their holding. However the talks will fail to be completed till the end of June, the date of expiration of the current contract. That is why the parties are to prolong the contract for another 3 months. The intergovernmental agreement will contain fundamental principles of cooperation, set forth investment guarantee instruments and stipulate reorganization of the gas sector of Moldova taking in to account interests of the Russian capital in this area.
The document will also define a mechanism to regulate debts of Moldova for gas and key constructs of the new gas supply contract. The head of the Ministry of Economy expressed confidence that Moldova would have no problems with gas supply connected with prolongation of the contract and its price would not rise because oil prices are declining. It should be reminded that the term of acting contract for supply of gas to Moldova and its transit through its territory expired on December, 31, 2011 and the signing of new contracts was postponed twice. Moscow and Chisinau have problems on matters of property of Gazprom in Moldova emerged in the context of obligations assumed by our country on the EU Third Energy Package. The problem of Moldova’s debt for natural gas, which approaches $3.5 bln., with arrears of Transndniestria included, is also to be solved.
