Moldovan authorities to beef up protection of human trafficking victims

Special units for hearing vulnerable witnesses in human trafficking cases, in particular abused children, will be set up in courts, prosecutor's offices and police commissariats in all Moldovan districts. At the same time, minor victims and witnesses will benefit from psychological counselling during the trial.

Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and European Integration Minister and chairman of the national committee against human trafficking, Iurie Leanca, said today at a meeting that the actions fit into the justice reform. He added that they will ensure a better protection for minor victims and witnesses during the trials. "A complex approach is needed here, proceeding from the prevention of human trafficking cases and ending with a special attitude towards victims," Leanca said.

The head of the interior minister's cabinet, Igor Trofimov, said that Moldova remains among the main countries of origin of human trafficking victims. Thus, 142 human trafficking cases were recorded in 2011, among which 23 child trafficking cases. As many as 59 offences were registered in 2012, nine of them involving children.

Labour, Social Protection and Family Minister Valentina Buliga said that 46 victims, of whom ten children benefitted from counselling at the Assistance and Protection Centre of Human Trafficking Victims. She added that the authorities managed to prevent 22 trafficking cases.

Moldova signed bilateral agreements in this field with Turkey, Russia, Romania and Ukraine and launched joint anti-trafficking projects with other countries. About 28 million lei was allotted for the protection and assistance of human trafficking victims, of which about 3 million lei was earmarked to the above centre.
