Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu held a meeting with Speaker of the United States House of Representative John A. Boehner. The event took place on the sidelines of Lupu's official visit to the USA, according to the parliament's communication and public relations department.

The officials discussed the consolidation and diversification of the Moldovan-US relations at all the levels, developments in the domestic political situation in Moldova, including the presidential election in March 2012, the implementation of political and economic reforms. John A. Boehner said that the USA will further back Moldova to promote reforms in different sectors, and to advance on the path of democratization and European integration.

Lupu noted that the 20th anniversary of the Moldovan-US diplomatic relations is marked this year. The Moldovan-US relations have livened up and deepened in an unprecedented manner over the past two years and a half. Bilateral dialogue was given a fresh impetus especially in 2011 due to the visits of many high officials to Moldova, especially, US Vice-President Joseph Biden (March 2011) and senator John McCain (June 2011). We want that the Moldovan-US partnership step up and that the quality of the political dialogue enhances so as to meet the strategic interests of our states, Lupu said. He praised the US financial assistance provided to Moldova via the Compact Programme of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (262 million dollars) for such important fields as the irrigation system and road infrastructure.

Lupu also said that Moldova relies on the US political support within the 5+2 negotiations on the Transnistrian conflict settlement, including the transformation of the current peacekeeping operation into a multinational civil mission with international mandate. We will be grateful for the USA's political support in the dialogue between Washington with the European Union aiming at strengthening Moldova's European integration process, which is impossible without a final settlement of the Transnistrian problem.

As for economic cooperation, Lupu said that Moldova relies on the activity of the friendship group for Moldova in the US Congress "Congressional Moldova Caucus", set up on 19 March 2012, comprising 28 US lawmakers, and officially launched on 20 June, within an official visit by the parliament speaker to Washington. We hope that the creation and consolidation of the activity of the group will contribute to promoting bilateral relations, especially, to strengthening their parliamentary dimension. In the context, Lupu spoke in favour of quashing the amendment Jackson-Vanick for Moldova until August 2012, as well as in favour of a normal permanent trade regime between Moldova and the USA, which will directly contribute to boosting the bilateral economic cooperation and will ensure the access of the US products and services to the regional market via Moldova.

At the end of the meeting, Lupu officially invited John A. Boehner to visit Moldova.
