Group of Moldova's Friends created in US Congress
On the sidelines of his official visit to the United States, Moldovan Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu participated in the inauguration of the Group of Moldova's Friends in the US Congress "Concessional Moldova Caucasus". Attending the event were also the co-chairmen of the group, US congressmen David Price and Joe Pitts, as well as Senator John McCain, the parliament's communication and public relations department has said. In his speech, Joe Pitts stressed the USA's interest in Moldova's evolution and development prospects, speaking about the partnership relations between the two states. The US congressman praised the country's achievements in the implementation of political, economic and institutional reforms. In the same context, Price advocated the consolidation of bilateral cooperation with the Moldovan parliament. We would like to step up the bilateral partnership between Moldova and the USA and to advance with the quality of the political dialogue towards a commitment that would meet the political interest of our countries, he said. David Price also spoke in favour of deepening the friendship relations between Moldova and North Carolina, including at parliamentary level and for the removal of the Jakson-Vanick amendment. At the meeting, US Senator John McCain highlighted the need to examine the quashing of the Jakson-Vanick amendment for Moldova, in parallel with the Russian Federation. Moldovan Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu thanked for the creation of the Group of Moldova's Friends in the US Congress "Concessional Moldova Caucasus", describing it as an important dialogue platform for the consolidation of bilateral ties. At the same time, Lupu expressed gratitude for the elaboration of a draft law in the US Congress providing for quashing of the Jakson-Vanick amendment for Moldova by August 2012. This would bring about many benefits and pragmatic results for both states and would secure a normal trade regime between Moldova and the USA.
