Prime Minister Vladimir Filat has said he hopes that the Prut River will become a real chipping artery. He made the statement at a ceremony of resuming the inland river navigation between Cahul and Giurgiulesti last weekend.

The Premier said that a Governmental meeting will soon consider the Prut navigation subject, and decide on the problem of continuing the riverbed cleansing works and strengthening its bank infrastructure.

“A lot work is to be done. For resuming the navigation in the Cahul-Giurgiulesti section, riverbed and fairway cleansing works worth 200,000 lei were already made. Developing the inland navigation will strongly influence the national economy, and not only that. Water transportation is cheaper; besides, we will protect roads from destructions if transporting heavy freights”, he said.

Anatol Salaru, Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure, said that barges will transport materials necessary for the road infrastructure reconstruction. “The Prut and Dniester are the E-category rivers, i.e. of international importance. In conformity with agreements our country signed, we must ensure their navigation”, the Minister said.

Salaru said that the Prut navigation will be open till the town of Leova before the winter beginning. This year, 300,000 tons of construction materials will be transported by this water artery.

Ministry specialist Igor Zaharia told Infotag that barges will be towed by a tug of the Ungheni port. “The port has about 40 cranes, tugs and barges of 200 and 600 tons freight-carrying capacity”, he said.

Representatives of Giurgiulesti [Moldova] and Constanta [Romania] ports took a part in the navigation restoration, as well as officials of the Romanian Ministry of Transport and Road Infrastructure.

A barge with 600 tons of crushed stones came to Cahul from the Constanta port [Romania] for the first time.

The distance between the Giurgiulesti port and the Cahul moorage is 83 km.
