Situation around NIT television channel is one of chief questions in EU-RM relations – Stefan Fule
The situation around the closure of Moldovan oppositional NIT television channel is one of the chief questions in the EU-Republic of Moldova relations, EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule stated in his telephone talk with the ex-President of Moldova, Chairman of the Communist Party Vladimir Voronin.
According to the Communist Party press service, the European Commissioner said that on Tuesday he met in Brussels with Moldovan Prime Minister Vladimir Filat and discussed in detail with him the freedom of speech problem in Moldova, in particular details and circumstances of the NIT channel closure.
Stefan Fule emphasized the authorities must be particularly attentive to this problem. He highlighted as very important the forthcoming parliamentary hearings on the freedom of speech initiated by the oppositional Communist faction.
Filat assured Commissioner Stefan Fule that the hearings shall necessarily take place. From his part, Fule proposed to delegate European Union experts to the hearings.
The governmental press service reported that in the Filat-Fule meeting, the parties discussed questions pertaining to relations between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union and promotion of dialog on Moldova's Euro-integration.
Commissioner Fule called Premier Filat to proceed with achieving the goals set, which should enhance Moldova’s approximation with the European Union. Stefan Fule recommended redoubling actions to combat corruption and accelerate the judiciary reform, as this should create prerequisites for transition to next stage of dialog on visa facilitation.
Filat and Fule discussed also the Transnistrian problem.
Infotag’s dossier: On April 5, 2012 the Audiovisual Coordinating Council (ACC) revoked broadcast license from the NIT under the pretext of biased covering of events in the republic and lack of pluralism. The channel really covered the activities of the opposition Communist Party in detail, which gave the governing Alliance for European Integration (AEI) a formal pretext to call the channel “a Communist mouthpiece”. AEI leaders had many a time voiced discontent and irritation over the manner of news presenting and analyzing by the channel.
