The first meeting of the Moldovan-Romanian joint intergovernmental commission for European integration was held in Bucharest on 3 June, the Moldovan Foreign and European Integration Ministry's information and media communication service has reported. The session was co-chaired by Moldovan First Deputy Premier, Foreign and European Integration Minister Iurie Leanca, Deputy Foreign Minister Natalia Gherman , Romanian Foreign Minister Andrei Marga and European Affairs Minister Leonard Orban. Experts from both states participated in the event. The sides discussed noteworthy developments in the Moldova-EU talks, as well as prospects for extending and deepening bilateral cooperation in this sector. Taking into account Romania's active role in supporting the EU's enlargement and constantly backing Moldova's European line, the Moldovan delegation expressed gratitude for Romania's contribution to co-organizing and co-chairing the sixth meeting of the Group for Moldova's European Action held on 25 June 2012. The group is an efficient platform of dialogue on relations between Moldova and the EU. The Romanian officials highlighted the importance of advancing in the negotiations on an association agreement and an accord on a deep and comprehensive free trade area with the EU; the signing of the agreement on common airspace, the accord on the protection of geographic indications of agricultural products and foodstuffs, and the accord amending the Moldova-EU agreement on the facilitation of the visa regime. The Romanian foreign minister noted that the commission wants to mediate Moldova's advancement towards pre-accession to the EU. On the occasion of the meeting of the joint commission, Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat and Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta inaugurated a videoconference system, which will be an efficient framework for communication on reforms related to the Moldova-EU negotiations. The format of the meeting allowed setting objectives and specific projects of bilateral cooperation in the following sectors: 1) adjustment of the legislation, 2) food security, 3) justice and fight against discrimination, 4) domestic affairs. The participants examined aspects of the development assistance that Romanian had given to Moldova. The sitting of the Moldovan-Romanian joint intergovernmental commission for European integration took place after a bilateral meeting between Iurie Leanca and the head of the Romanian diplomacy, Andrei Marga. Minister Leanca also met Bucharest-based EU ambassadors to Moldova. The heads of the diplomatic missions praised the pace of the dialogue between Moldova and the EU, reconfirming their support for reforms in Moldova in order to take over and apply EU standards in all sectors. The sides also exchanged opinions on the current stage and prospects of solving the Transnistrian issue.
