The Moldovan authorities are keeping under control the situation emerged because of the drought and of the heavy rains recorded lately. "The government's agencies are functional and are closely monitoring the situation. They undertake the needed measures to overcome the difficult situation emerged in the country because of the drought," Prime Minister Vlad Filat said today after the meeting of the Commission for Emergencies.

According to the State Hydro-Meteorological Service's head, Ilie Boian, in early July, the air temperature was by 5-9 degrees higher than the average temperatures of this period. The recent rains have restored the soil's humidity reserves. The air temperature will stand at about 30 degrees Celsius in July, but the rains will stop, Boian said.

Moldovan Agriculture and Food Minister Vasile Bumacov said that the restored humidity would be enough only for a short period of time and that the consequences of drought would be further felt in the country. He expressed concern with the damages caused to fodders' reserves, noting that this might prompt farmers to slaughter their cattle for meat.

The Agriculture and Food Ministry estimates the damages caused by drought and heavy rains at about 87 million lei, which accounts for 5.5 per cent of the agricultural goods' value forecast for 2012.

At the same time, Filat said that in spite of the drought, the harvest yielded this year would reach the average harvest of the past 15 years. Filat recommended that the Agriculture and Food Ministry accurately assess the damages caused by the natural hazards, in order to dismiss "any groundless statements". Bumacov gave assurances that the Agriculture and Food Ministry would prepare the estimations within a ten-day term. Afterwards, the government will analyse the need to ask the help of international organizations in this respect.
