Transnistria marking Commemoration Day
The self-proclaimed Transnistrian Moldovan Republic is marking its Day of commemoration and mourning over the victims of the 1991-1992 events on the Dniester.
August 1, 1992 was the day when armed confrontation ended between the defenders of the Republic of Moldova’s territorial integrity, on the one side, and defenders of the independence of Transnistria, on the other.
President Yevgeny Shevchuk stated in his address to citizenry on this occasion that the Transnistrian people’s wisdom, patience and firm will “prevented Moldovan nationalists from reaching their objective”.
Those tragic events took the lives of over 800 Transnistrians, including women and children, and “the bloody summer of 1992 only further consolidated Transnistrians in their resolution to make life in Transnistria better, and united them against evil and violence that took place at that war. Today, our republic is developing consistently, advancing towards international recognition”.
In Tiraspol, a commemoration rally was held at the Glory memorial, and flowers were laid to the Eternal Flame and graves of Transnistria defenders killed in action in 1991-1992.
Throughout the day, the doors of museums across the region will be open free to all people wishing to see special expositions dedicated to the events that happened here two decades ago. In Tiraspol, several book exhibitions are demonstrating literature and other materials on the early 1990s events.
Infotag’s dossier: According to Chisinau’s official data, the armed conflict on the Dniester involved nearly 29 thousand military from the Moldovan side, of whom 386 persons died, hundreds were wounded, and 284 were disabled.
