The state will provide assistance to the agricultural producers hit by the drought, to buy seeds, fertilizers and diesel oil. Agriculture and Food Minister Vasile Bumacov made statements to this effect at a today's news conference.

The minister said the help is likely to be distributed in two instalments via the Agency for Interventions and Payments in Agriculture. The second instalment of the assistance is to be made available to farmers, depending on the area of the sowed lands.

Bumacov said the government sent requests to all the donors, in order to get additional funds to back the farmers, so as not to compromise the 2013 harvest.

The Agriculture and Food Ministry presently assesses the overall losses caused by the frost, hail and drought to the farming sector. A mission of representatives of the development partners is to soon come to Moldova to make these evaluations, Bumacov added.

The harvest of cereals will be by 25-35 per cent poorer than forecast in 2012 because of the severe heat, as well as the winter frost, while the rape was completely compromised. Also, there will be practically no harvest of maize in the central and southern Moldova districts. The crops of sunflower and sugar beet are in danger too.
