Prime Minister Vlad Filat today participated in the 12th session of the Assembly of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences (ASM), the government's press service has said.

In his report, ASM head Gheorghe Duca said that, despite the financial difficulties the Academy has been facing, the ASM achieved notable results in 2009. Gheorghe Duca urged the scientific community to focus on consolidating the Moldovan society, providing assistance to national economy branches and enhancing Moldova's prestige and people's welfare.

Prime Minister Vlad Filat said that he was honoured to participate in the assembly of scientists, stressing that the ASM has a decisive role in the society.

The prime minister gave assurances that the government has the will and ability necessary to support the development of science. Vlad Filat called on the ASM members to maintain more efficient communication with the central authorities so as to settle and prevent the problems faced by the scientific community.

The prime minister criticized the way the reforms had been earlier carried out in Moldova, including in relations with the ASM. He stressed that the reforms were sporadic and implemented in sectors lacking an in-depth approach.

The prime minister assured the ASM staff that the development of the scientific and innovation areas represent one of the government's objectives.

"We are crossing a complicated period, including for the scientific field, but we are aware that we will not be able to edify something durable without investments," Vlad Filat said.

The prime minister stressed that further amendments to the 2010 budget will allow supplementing funds for the development of science.

"The actions which we have undertaken so far, which were sometimes painful, will yield results, which will allow amending the budget in order to complete the projects in which your institution is involved as well," the prime minister said.

Vlad Filat underlined that he wanted the scientists to see a partner in his person, and said that they may rely on his openness.

The prime minister urged the scientific community to contribute to the process of Moldova's European integration along with the government.

The prime minister wished the Moldovan scientific community success and great achievements in the implementation of targeted projects.
