Ordinary parliamentary elections in Transnistria will be on December 12. However, the region’s election commission is resolutely saying the main preparation work shall be accomplished by August 15.

Commission chairman Piotr Denisenko stated on the local television that the body’s chief task is to verify and update voter registers and to form territorial election commissions. In his words, entire information must come to the CEC by August 15 at the latest, after which a big work will commence – formation of electoral constituencies.

According to the latest data, there are 401.7 thousand voters registered in Transnistria presently, though one year ago, when the region had local elections, the figure was 392.4 thousand. Denisenko explained the increase as follows:  quite many residents from populated areas that are under the Republic of Moldova’s jurisdiction but situated on the eastern, left Dniester bank, prefer to receive Transnistrian pensions, which are higher than in the mainland Moldova, so they acquire the Transnistrian citizenship. Besides, he said, there are quite many foreign entrepreneurs residing in Transnistria.

“These two categories of people have the Transnistrian propiska [residence registration]. Accordingly, they are included into voter registers. Therefore, the electoral lists need to be systematically updated. Depending on the precise number of voters, we will be defining the boundaries of electoral constituencies”, said the commission chairman.

According to preliminary estimates, the region is going to have 43 constituencies, with each to have approximately 9.3 thousand voters.

Parliamentary elections in Transnistria are held on the basis of single-mandate constituencies and are considered valid at a voter turnout of 25%. At the previous elections in 2005, there were 410 thousand names on voter registers, of whom 202 thousand went to the polls.
