Acting President Mihai Ghimpu had a telephone conversation with Romanian President Traian Basescu on 9 July at the initiative of the Romanian head of state, the presidential press service has said.
Basescu conveyed his sympathy to the Moldovan citizens over the floods that hit some regions in the Republic of Moldova, noting that Romania was willing to provide all support necessary to overcome the crisis situation.
Ghimpu said that the Moldovan authorities' most difficult problem resided in the construction of dwellings for the victims whose houses had been destroyed by floods. In the context, he asked for Romania's support to solve this problem.
Traian Basescu said Romania was ready to provide construction materials for new houses from the previously promised grant of 100 million euros. He said that the materials could reach Moldova in about two weeks after the Moldovan authorities' request.
Mihai Ghimpu thanked his Romanian counterpart for supporting Moldova in this difficult situation and for the offered humanitarian aid that had already reached the flood-hit districts.
