The political parties and movements, registered with the Central Election Commission as participants in the constitutional referendum campaign, may place their electoral advertisements, take part in debates, participate in other forms of electoral canvassing, though the registration period will last until August 4.
The CEC says registered campaigners are free to lodge protests, if they think their political rivals commit violations. Besides, they are supposed to present weekly their financial reports to the CEC. By law, each party may invest maximum 7.5 million lei in the referendum campaign.
Infotag’s dossier: At the September 5 referendum on amending Article 78 in the Republic of Moldova Constitution pertaining to electing president, voters will be offered to answer if they agree to amend the Constitution in a way to begin electing the head of state directly by the whole nation, not in parliament as now.
To date, the CEC has registered 13 campaigners, and most of these parties and movements are referendum idea supporters. Among the fiercest opponents to the referendum is the parliamentary Communist Party, which has stated from the very beginning it shall not simply boycott the referendum but shall use every day in the remaining 1.5 months to persuade citizens into not going to the polls on September 5. The Communists believe that such upsetting of the referendum is the only possible way to legally overthrow the current Parliament and hold an early parliamentary election.
