The organization and holding of the 5 September 2010 constitutional referendum, as well as of the elections due this autumn were the main subjects tackled at a meeting of Parliament Speaker, acting President Mihai Ghimpu with the members of a delegation of observers of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), led by Andreas Gross, the parliament's mass media relations department has said.

President Mihai Ghimpu presented to the delegation of observers information on the scheduled electoral exercise. He referred to the juridical regulations, as well as to the measures undertaken by the authorities to organize and carry out the referendum. The acting president thanked the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for attention and support given Moldova to fairly hold the referendum. The presence of this delegation of observers is one more proof that we enjoy the support of this prestigious European institution, the president also said.

The head of the delegation of PACE observers, Andreas Gross, expressed conviction that the PACE observers will attend a fair carrying out of the plebiscite. At the same time, Andreas Gross said he is contented with the fact that the nominal composition of the Moldovan parliament's delegation to PACE was given the final touches. He stressed the need to establish a constructive dialogue between the parliamentary majority and the opposition.

At the meeting, the sides also discussed the political situation in Moldova and the way the latter influences the social and economic realities.

The PACE delegation is made up of 17 observers, and is on a working visit to Chisinau on 3-6 September to monitor the constitutional referendum held in Moldova on 5 September. The delegation is also composed of the PACE rapporteurs for Moldova, Egidijus Vareikis (Lithuania) and Lise Chrisoffersen (Norway). Under the visit's agenda, the delegation members today also had separate meetings with the leaders of the Alliance for European Integration and the ones of the parliamentary opposition.
