Moldovan parliament speaker meets Ukrainian special representative for Transnistrian issue
Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu held a meeting with Ukraine's special representative for the Transnistrian issue, Ihor Kharchenko on 15 May. Attending the meeting was Ukrainian Ambassador to Moldova Serhiy Pirozhkov, according to the parliament's media relations department. The officials discussed the process of settling the Transnistrian conflict, as well as developments in the Moldovan-Ukrainian bilateral relations. Lupu noted that Moldova views the partnership with the neighbouring country as strategic, and pays high attention to relations with Ukraine. An adequate juridical basis for parliamentary cooperation has been set up, with the sides having signed a Moldovan-Ukrainian inter-parliamentary cooperation agreement during Lupu's visit to Kiev in September 2011. Lupu and Kharchenko noted a positive development in the Transnistrian settlement both at the bilateral level and within the negotiations in the 5+2 format. Lupu also praised the economic and social actions aimed at driving the two banks of the Dniester river closer. "We will further back such actions, so that they lead us to a political settlement of the problem," Lupu said. He pointed up the importance to showcase the core of the problem, after which a formula for the status of the Transnistrian region should be found. Lupu said that the Moldovan authorities have a consolidated stance on the Transnistrian issue. Lupu also said that the Moldovan parliament had recently held a special meeting on the Transnistrian issue and a working group is now being set up to start a dialogue with representatives of the supreme soviet in Tiraspol. Kharchenko said that Ukraine has been keeping a close eye on the evolutions in the Transnistrian region and will take efforts to contribute to a settlement of the conflict. The sides also ascertained that Chisinau and Kiev have a joint stance on the Transnistrian issue.
