Prime Minister Vlad Filat today held a meeting with President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, according to the government's communication and press relations department. The two officials met in Ashkhabad, the capital of Turkmenistan, on the sidelines of a summit of the Council of Heads of Government of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Filat and Berdimuhamedow approached bilateral relations between Moldova and Turkmenistan, as well as international cooperation. The officials focused on cooperation prospects in the energy and agriculture sectors, and expressed mutual interest in its diversifying and deepening collaboration. They also discussed the need to boost tourism cooperation. The two officials agreed to set up a joint intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation to elaborate and implement mechanisms for using the two countries' economic potential. The main trends of activity will be the sectors of: energy, agriculture, investments, construction etc. The first meeting of the Moldovan-Turkmen intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation will take place by late 2012. The 20th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Moldova and Turkmenistan is marked this year. On this occasion, the officials voiced hope that the Moldovan-Turkmen relations will further develop for the benefit of the citizens from the two states.
