The Party of Socialists (PSRM) suggested that an alternative government should be set up in Moldova, PSRM leader Igor Dodon said after a meeting with President Nicolae Timofti.

Dodon said that the predictions made by the PSRM's economist in early 2012 have proven out and that the Moldovan economy is weakening. "If the economic situation does not change, the government will not be able to pay citizens' wages and pensions. Given this fact, we decided at the party's congress that the PSRM will elaborate an alternative programme for economic development and will set up a cabinet of ministers in charge of its implementation", Dodon said.

Dodon said that the new team would be made up of ministers of Tarlev and Grecianii governments [in office during the 2001-2009 leadership of the Party of Communists]. "The team will also monitor the government's activity and will come out with solutions in order to overcome difficult situations. The programme will be based on socialist ideas", Dodon added.

He said he had talked to Timofti about the Socialists' intention to appeal against the Article 7 (regarding the sexual minorities) of the equality law at the Constitutional Court.
