“We knew from the very beginning that the Central Election Commission would do all it can to torpedo the referendum on Moldova’s accession to the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan”, Social Democratic Party Chairman Victor Shelin stated at the CEC meeting on Friday.
Shelin accused the Commission of its being a politicized body – an obedient instrument in hands of the governing Alliance for European Integration (AEI).
“We learned yet yesterday that the CEC would give a negative conclusion on referendum holding by recognizing as many as 37 thousand signatures as void – out of the total number of 232 thousand we have raised and submitted”, stated the leader of the SDPM, the referendum initiator.
CEC Iurie Ciocan reminded the meeting participants, in particular SDPM Chairman Victor Shelin, that the CEC is a non-political state body, that its members were checking the signatures’ authenticity 14 days, and that they were driven by legal rules and norms, not political preferences.
The Commission is continuing its working meeting, without announcing its final, official verdict or figures of signatures, so far. Details of the session will follow in Infotag’s news bulletin later today.
