The staff of the Customs Service has been cut by four per cent, falling to 1,896 people, following the institutional reorganization of the body launched in early 2010, the service's director-general, Tudor Balitchi, told a meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Customs Service held late last week.
Balitchi also said that the institution's central apparatus was reorganized into two departments: one deals with the enforcement of the legislation and the second one with incomes and information technologies. The two are the main pillars ensuring the stability of the entire customs system, he said.
The goals of the reorganization of the institution were to redirect resources towards analytical activities having direct impact on the efficiency of customs control, to ensure centralized management of operations aimed at combating customs frauds and to rationally and adequately use the skills of customs officers, Balitchi said.
