A delegation of European Union railroad transport experts has arrived in Transnistria to check the current technical condition of the Transnistrian section of the Republic of Moldova’s railroad network and to establish if the section is technically fit for regular traffic, in particular if it is possible to restart the circulation of the Chisinau-Odessa diesel train, which was extremely popular and busy in previous decades.

According to the Transnistrian region’s central television channel, most of the experts are from the Lithuanian Ministry of Transport. During 3 days, they are going to visit the railroad stations of Bendery, Tiraspol, and Novosavitskaya, to examine the railroad infrastructure and the rolling stock.

Stanislav Kamayev, Deputy Director of the Transnistrian Railroad Company, stated the Transnistrian section meets all necessary technical conditions, so trains are welcome.

He said, “We attach a great importance to the infrastructure condition. All necessary technical operations are carried out timely and according to technical rules. In 2009 alone, the Transnistrian Railroad Company invested 26 million rubles [some US$2.6 million equivalent] in infrastructure maintenance. A particular attention is attached to railroad safety questions. Routine checks are carried out regularly. Last February, Ukrainian experts examined the technical shape of the Transnistrian railroad section. The CFM [National Railroad Company of Moldova] was also invited to make its assessment, and carried out necessary measuring, but has not yet sent in its results. Instead of this, the Moldovan side constantly insists on the need to check the competence of Transnistrian railroad specialists”.

Kamayev reaffirmed Transnistria is interested in resuming a full-scale railroad communication between Chisinau and Odessa. He stated Tiraspol’s readiness – as a goodwill gesture – to pass the Chisinau-Odessa diesel train line completely into the Moldovan side’s administration.

Infotag’s dossier:  The Transnistrian Railroad Company was unilaterally established in 2004, when the separatist authorities of the self-proclaimed Transnistrian republic announced that the entire CFM property available in Transnistria shall now be the region’s national property. Traffic along the 42-km-long Transnistrian segment was suspended in March 2006, since when the Moldovan authorities have been unable to control the segment and traffic safety there. Presently, there is only one train circulating via the Transnistrian region – the Russian Federation’s daily Moscow-Chisinau express, along with Russia’s and Ukraine’s transit freight trains. Transnistria-made goods are exported exclusively via the Moldovan territory. To resume full-fledged traffic via the region, the CFM maintains Transnistria must first return to Chisinau the CFM rolling stock, must resume selling tickets in the region for the Moldovan lei, and must give Moldovan ticket collectors an access to trains.
