$197m worth of drugs burned in 'Poppy' operation

Some 100,000 poppy and cannabis plants valued at $197 million have been destroyed since the launch of the operation codenamed “Poppy 2010” eight weeks ago ago, announced, Vladimir Ceban, head of the Interior Ministry's anti-drug department, at a news conference on Monday, Info-Prim Neo reports.

According to Lt. Col. Vladimir Ceban, people have been extremely passive in combating drugs, failing to report cases of cultivation of such plants in their neighborhoods.

Vladimir Ceban also announced that the Ministry of the Interior sought to black-list 30 new types of narcotic substances circulating in Moldova.

The operation Poppy 2010 is conducted from June 1 through August 31.
