Moldovan acting President Mihai Ghimpu today participated in events dedicated to the beginning of the new school year. He wished children and students to be "correct and honest and to think much of the state's values and of the possibility to study in their mother tongue".

Mihai Ghimpu participated today in a first school bell ceremony at the lyceum Gheorghe Ghimpu, named after his brother, in the village of Colonita.

Also today, Ghimpu held a speech for students of the Free International University of Moldova.

The acting president said that young people should appreciate the possibility to choose their education institutions, to study in their native language, unlike previous generations, which have been imposed to study in Russian. "Unfortunately, now, a third of the country's territory is not under constitutional bodies and many children and young people do not enjoy the possibility to study in their mother tongue," Ghimpu said.

Mihai Ghimpu said that democracy means freedom of choice and young people should fully enjoy it. Furthermore, the acting president invited the students of the Free International University of Moldova to the Condrita-based presidential residence, specifying that it has been recently visited by children from Transnistria. Also today, Mihai Ghimpu will meet students of the State University of Medicine.

The rector of the Free International University of Moldova, Andrei Galben, said that the university had over 10,000 graduates and branches in Sudan and Cameroon and that a new branch was due to be open in Iraq.
