Gunfire was heard at the Moldovan-Romanian border during an operation to catch two Romanian citizens who transported 26 parcels of contraband cigarettes by two vehicles. The operation ended with no victims. Only one of the vehicles was damaged, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to a communiqué from the Iasi Border Police Inspectorate, the incident happened last night. The Botosani border police tracked down two Land Rovers moving along the bank of the Prut towards Romania, in the direction of Crasnaleuca settlement.
The drivers of the two vehicles registered in Ireland and the UK ignored the warnings of the border police, trying to run away. The border policemen fired 22 shots – 10 warning shots and 12 shots towards vehicles’ tires. The two cars were ultimately blocked.
It was established that the two drivers aged 19 and, respectively, 31 were citizens of Romania, from Botosani County.
The 26 parcels contained about 40,000 packets of cigarettes that were smuggled into Romania over the Prut by a boat.
The Romanian authorities are conducting investigations in concert with the Moldovan ones to establish all the circumstances of this case.
