Those responsible for blocking a major storm drain pipe in Chisinau's Train Station area should face criminal charges, Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca demanded, after it was found that the obstruction had been caused by an intentionally placed plug, Info-Prim Neo reports.

Gabriela Ciumac, the head of the municipal department responsible for foreign relations and regional cooperation, stated that the plug was put there to sabotage the EU-funded project aimed to prevent flooding in low-lying areas like the Train Station. “The police must react, because we are trying here to attract funds and implement useful projects for the city, only to see our efforts sabotaged”, said Gabriela Ciumac.

Dorin Chirtoaca expressed his indignation at the fact that the police had no information whatsoever on who was responsible. “Four days have passed since, and they can't give us any information”, fumed Chirtoaca.

Last week municipal workers discovered a plug in a storm drain pipe which could have caused irreversible damage had it stayed there any further.

The efforts to rehabilitate storm drain systems are part of a €900,000 project funded by the European Union.
