Prime Minister Vlad Filat today took part in the inauguration of a plastic waste processing factory, the government's communication and press relations department has said. The factory is the result of a pilot-project carried out by the Moldovan Academy of Sciences (ASM) jointly with the UISPAC enterprise. The prime minister visited the waste processing halls. He said that the company serves as an example of successful processing of waste and its transformation into valuable things. At the same time, the factory makes it possible to avoid environmental pollution. Filat said that there are over 3 million tons of plastic waste in Moldova that need to be processed. "We need a law that would provide for efficient waste processing, by outlining the main obligations of local authorities, as regards the collection and transportation of waste to the processing facilities. At the same time, we are to discuss and to decide on the use of money from the Environmental Fund. The proceeds are accumulated to this fund from the environmental fee, paid by those who use plastic containers for foodstuffs. The money should be used to promote the collection and processing of plastic waste," Filat said. The chairman of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences, Gheorghe Duca, said that the plant is able to annually process 250 tons of waste. He added that the enterprise is using a new technology worked out by scientists of the ASM's Chemistry Institute. "We worked out a technology that allows processing un-known plastic waste as well. Another novelty is that this technology does not use water. Therefore, we do not have to deal with residual waters," Duca stressed. Gheorghe Duca noted that 2.4 million lei has been invested in the opening of the factory. The money was allotted in equal amount by the Moldovan Academy of Sciences and the UISPAC enterprise.
