On the sidelines of his official visit to the United States, Moldovan Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu held a meeting with Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Gordon, the parliament's communication and public relations department has said.

At the meeting, Philip Gordon said that Moldova has recorded significant progress in the implementation of the democratic reforms, highlighting the need to consolidate the anti-corruption efforts and the steps meant to ensure the supremacy of law. As for the Transnistrian problem, Gordon highlighted the USA's willingness to actively participate in the five plus two negotiating format, advocating an active cooperation between the USA and the European Union in this respect.

At the beginning of the meeting, Lupu said that the 20th anniversary of the Moldovan-US ties would be marked this year. The parliament speaker said that the Jakson-Vanick amendment for Moldova should be quashed by August 2012, in order to secure a normal trade regime between Moldova and the USA, which would significantly boost the bilateral economic and trade cooperation. In the context, Lupu said that Moldova would highly appreciate the intervention of the US State Department in this respect.

Expressing his stance on the matter, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Philip Gordon described the Jakson-Vanick amendment as an "obsolete heritage" of the Soviet-era, advocating the removal of this document.

In the context, Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu said that Moldova aims at strengthening the bilateral partnership with the USA and at advancing on the quality of the political dialogue towards an engagement that would meet the political interest of our countries. We are grateful for the financial assistance provided to Moldova within the Compact programme of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, which amounts to 262 million dollars and is implemented in priority fields such as irrigation systems and road infrastructure.

Lupu also said that the shift to a permanent normal trade regime would make it possible to diversify the Moldovan exports, to decrease Moldova's dependency on a limited number of sale markets, to consolidate its regional positions and to attract US investments in Moldova's economy, which would ensure the country's economic stability.

As for the Transnistria conflict, Lupu also said that Moldova further relies on the political support of the United States in the five plus two negotiating process, including in the transformation of the current peacekeeping mission into a multinational civil mission operating under international mandate. The Moldovan official said that Moldova would be grateful for the USA's support in Washington's dialogue with the European Union and other states, meant to consolidate Moldova's EU integration process, which would be impossible without the full settlement of the Transnistrian conflict. At the same time, Moldova is interested in supporting US projects and programmes under way, Lupu said.

Speaking about trade and economic fields, Lupu said that Moldova relies on the support of the Group of Moldova's Friends in the US Congress "Concessional Moldova Caucasus", set up on 19 March 2012, made up of 28 US lawmakers and officially launched on 20 June 2012. We hope that the creation and the consolidation of the activity of the Group of Moldova's Friends in the US Congress would contribute to the promotion of the bilateral ties, in particular on the parliamentary dimension, the Moldovan official said.
