Moldovan president marks Guard of Honour's 20th anniversary
For over 20 years, the proficiency and military preparation of the Guard of Honour have been highly appreciated and admired by Moldova's foreign guests and by its citizens, Supreme Commander of the National Armed Forces, Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti said today at a military ceremony held on the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Guard of Honour and of the Guard Battalion of the National Army. The head of state added that the servicemen of the Guard of Honour are a hallmark of the Defence Ministry and of the Republic of Moldova. "You fulfil your duties very well. In this respect, you are a model for us and I would like to thank you for the efforts undertaken over two decades and for representing the country at the highest level," Timofti said. Defence Minister Vitalie Marinuta said that the above subunit of the National Army is one of Moldova's symbols, adding that the military institution is proud of it. At the ceremony, the commander of the guard, lieutenant major Vasile Ojoga and banner-bearer, adjutant sergeant Vitalie Josan were awarded the state distinction "Military Merit", under a presidential decree. Also today, a group of servicemen of the Guard of Honour were given honorary diplomas from the Moldovan government, as well as state distinctions and valuable gifts from the Defence Ministry. At the festivity, the servicemen of the Guard of Honour staged some military exercises. The commander of the Guard Battalion of the National Army, Colonel Dumitru Mudrenco said that the servicemen of the Guard of Honour participate in over 250 ceremonies annually, such as protocol services, accreditation of foreign diplomats and handing of state distinctions. Tall, well-trained and handsome Moldovan youths who have medium-special education are enrolled in the Guard of Honour. They have daily specialized training lasting for four hours. The Guard of Honour was created under a decree of the Defence Ministry on 22 June 1992.
