The Moldovan Parliament’s largest Communist faction has demanded explanations from President Nicolae Timofti concerning his recent statements about Gagauzia [an autonomous region in southern Moldova] and the Gagauz people.
At the Parliament’s plenary sitting on Thursday, Communist Irina Vlah, an ethnic Gagauz, voiced indignation about the statement made by Nicolae Timofti during his meeting with Turkish President Abdullah Gul.
Irina Vlah said, “We want to know which greater loyalty the Gagauzes must demonstrate towards the Republic of Moldova. Timofti has failed a test for being a statesman because he divides people by the principle of ethnicity”.
Her party comrade MP Sergiu Stati stated, “By such sayings Nicolae Timofti simply mocks at and insults the citizens of the republic. Our President has called upon the leader of a foreign state, Turkey, to interfere into our domestic affairs. This is impermissible!”.
Infotag’s dossier: While in Istanbul earlier this week, Nicolae Timofti met with Turkish President Abdullah Gul and stated inter alia during their conversation that “the political and cultural elite of Gagauzia should demonstrate more loyalty towards the Republic of Moldova”.
