Moldovan farmlands cover an area of 2 million hectares, of which only 150 hectares (8%) are irrigated, according to data of the Apele Moldovei agency [dealing with the management of Moldovan waters].
There are about 300 irrigation facilities in Moldova, only a half of them being functional. The majority of them are located in Chisinau municipality (32 stations) and in Stefan Voda Raion (28 stations), as well as in Olanesti, Talmaz, Vulcanesti, Aneni Noi, Serpeni, Puhaceni and Gura Bicului villages.
Besides the Apele Moldovei agency, farmlands are also watered by farmers who use sprinkler systems.
In order to ensure food supply security in the country, Moldova has to increase the areas of irrigated farmlands to 300,000 hectares.
