A female resident of the Glinzeni village (Falesti Raion) was killed by a lightning last Sunday evening, when she was approaching her home, the Ministry of the Interior’s Civil Defense and Emergencies Service reported on Monday.
According to preliminary data, hurricane-force winds and tornadoes [which Moldova has never seen until last couple of years], accompanied with torrential rains, de-energized over 100 villages and towns in Moldova’s 13 raions. Seven villages in the Drochia, Floresti, Soroca and Dubasari Raions are now staying without stationary cable telephony.
The Service reported over 100 major trees fell down during the thunderstorm. The tree trunks paralyzed traffic in some streets and roads and cut down power supply lines.
Harvests were completely annihilated on 20 hectares of fruit orchards, 260 hectares of sugar beets, and 40 hectares of vegetable crops.
Serious damage was inflicted to 30 private houses, 7 schools and kindergartens, 2 primaria [local executive authority] buildings and two cultural centers.
The Service units and local authorities are working intensively to mitigate and repair the consequences of the elements.
The Chisinau Weather Center is warning that next several days will see more thunderstorms with showers, hail and winds with speeds of up to 25 meters per second. Air temperatures will not exceed 26 degrees centigrade, though last week they were some 10 degrees higher.
