The Tuesday’s visit to Chisinau by Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta caused discontent of a number of Moldovan political forces and citizens – supporters of Romanian President Traian Basescu, whom the Romanian Senate has suspended from office.

Today, several dozen people gathered near the Government Building in the city’s central square and started chanting “Down with Ponta”, “Down with power usurpers”, “Down with Communists” and other, thus protesting against the “unrightful” suspension of Basescu from office.

Earlier this month, discontent over Ponta’s coming here was voiced by the leaders of the Anti-Mafia Movement and the National Liberal Party, who regard Prime Minister Ponta as Basescu’s political enemy.

The protesters expressed apprehension that the results of the July 29 Basescu impeachment referendum may well be rigged.
